Pickup and Dropoff Locations

San Francisco is a densely populated city crammed onto the tip of a hilly peninsula. It is a great place to walk, bike, take the bus or MUNI to see the sights. If you are staying inside the city, a car is not necessary if you use public transportation or taxis (download the Flywheel app). However, a rental car can be helpful for getting outside of SF to places like Muir Woods, the north coast, Napa Valley or Yosemite in Northern California.

Rent a Car at SFO is easy to find, located in the Rental Car Center. After you get off the RED line AirTrain at one of the terminals, follow the airport signs to the Rental Car Center. Once you are in the Rental Car Center, go to the automated Fastbreak kiosk and enter your credit card, RapidRez or reservation number. The kiosk will locate your reservation & print out a ticket with the space number & rental agreement.

Payment Options

Unless you're renting from the airport, it's usually cheaper to book a car in the city itself. Many of the companies are located in the city's center, so you can drop off and pick up the vehicle wherever is most convenient.

When driving in San Francisco, be aware of bikes, pedestrians, and other drivers. The streets can be crowded and there are steep inclines. Plan your route ahead of time to avoid getting lost and wasting gas.

Upon arriving at the rental counter, be sure to bring your valid driver’s license with you that is issued in your name. Also, make sure to comply with the company's age policy and other charges, which can be found in the Rental Conditions section of their website.

Additional Driver Requirements

You can add another driver to your car rental, but there are some requirements they must meet. For example, they must be an Eligible Renter with a valid credit card, an Authorized Driver, or a Spouse or Domestic Partner. They must also meet the age and licence type requirements of the car rental agreement. If an unauthorized driver drives your car and gets into an accident, you could be held liable for the damage.

The additional driver fee varies by location and car category. It’s typically between $15-$25 a day. You can usually pay for an additional driver online or when you pick up your car. A valid drivers’ license is required for all additional drivers, and it should have been held for at least one year. Some locations require a valid International Driving Permit, as well. The following drivers do not have to pay an extra driver fee: the renter’s boss or coworkers, if they are on business travel; a spouse or domestic partner, if they are traveling with the renter; and a companion driver for a disabled person who fills out the non-licensed renter form.

Insurance Options

When you rent a car in San Francisco, it’s important to understand the company’s insurance options. Often, the rental company will ask whether you have auto car insurance or a credit card that provides primary or secondary car rental coverage. If so, the company will waive their minimum liability requirement. However, some cards have restrictions that may limit your third-party liability to a specific value or exclude certain types of vehicles from coverage.

In addition, a credit card can help with medical bills and loss damage waiver (LDW). The rental car company will want to ensure their vehicle is returned in the same condition it was when you received it. That’s why they will tap your insurance to make sure they’re covered, even if you caused the accident. It’s also a good idea to inspect the car for damage before you leave. Look for scratches, dents and other marks, and take pictures of the vehicle to document any existing damage.
